John-Corbett-and-Nia-Vardalos-in-IFCs-My-Big-Fat-Greek-Wedding-2002-4

John Corbett and Nia Vardalos

My Big Fat Greek Wedding is a crowd pleasing, feel-good romantic comedy that even made a jaded fool like me shed a tear, even though I’ve all but given up on romantic love at this point.

Nia Vardalos wrote it and plays a plain Greek girl who is 30, past her “expiration date,” working at her family’s restaurant, and going nowhere. When I say “plain,” I mean movie plain, or movie ugly. Mugly. In other words, she’s one montage away from stopping traffic. Which is pretty much what she does to John Corbett’s character.

Michael Constantine

Vardalos has a lot of fun with her family’s quirks, how proud they are of their Greek heritage (their house is a replica of The Parthenon) and how her father (Michael Constantine) believes that Windex is the cure for any ailment. At times the characterizations of her big fat Greek family tip into big fat stereotypes. The contrast is made with Ian’s family which is hopelessly white bread and soulless.

If I had the choice I would much rather hang out with Toula’s family. Especially Cousin Nikki [tiger growl]. But Greek people might take offense at how their community is portrayed in the movie and, although I’m pretty white bread, I don’t know anyone as sad as Ian’s parents.

Are these crazy kids going to be able to work this out and live happily ever after? Well, I don’t do spoilers but the name of the movie is My Big Fat Greek Wedding not My Chance at Love That Was Ruined by My Big Fat Greek Family.

You can quibble about the little things, but the characters are so sweet and the chemistry between Nia Vardolos and John Corbett is so infectious, you just have to go with it and get swept up in it like like they are.

The Misplaced Boy MST3K Scale:

Like I said, MBFGW even made this ground-up old cynic believe in love again. Hmm…maybe I’ll reactivate my OKCupid account.

  1. And . . . at the end of the credits, a lovely shout-out to the memory of the late, wonderful, talented singer-songwriter, Josh Clayton-Felt. A dear family friend.
